Snowbird RV Adventure Part 1: San Luis Obispo to Port Hueneme

Part 1: Day 35

Using the full hookups at El Chorro campground.
December 8: It takes about forty-five minutes to get packed up when we have to empty our gray and black water tanks.

For the two of us (employing off-the-grid water conservation techniques we normally use up at the cabin), discharge is required about once a week or so.

For that reason, we include a stay at a park like El Chorro with full hookups to coincide with our sewer access needs.

Highway 101 follows the coast north of Santa Barbara.
Today was a travel day to a single overnight stop. We are nearing the end of the first part of our Snowbird RV Adventure and are pacing our driving so it's easy to manage. For that reason, we added a stop near Oxnard into our schedule to split the distance to Los Angeles.

Our route took us south on Highway 101, often overlooking the Pacific Ocean on a beautiful sunny day (kind of rare on this Snowbird sun-seeking trip).

He's hard to see, but that's the Seabee statue on base.
Our destination for the night was the Fairways RV Resort at the Port Huenene Naval Construction Battalion Center.

Men and women serving here are called Seabees. The name comes from C.B. for construction battalion. And the bee insignia was chosen because it's a busy worker that stings if provoked. Seabees build bases, airfields, underwater structures, roads, bridges and other support facilities.

The Fairways RV Resort is next to the base's golf course. We enjoyed some much needed sunshine before heading inside to fix dinner.

Our golf course view from Site #43 at Fairways RV Resort.

Planning driving days to minimize long hauls has made this trip much more enjoyable than our Rental RV Road Trip. Last year we had time constraints making 400+ mile days more common than not. This is a much better and more enjoyable way to travel. -- Wayne and Margy

  2. When I was a kid my dad drove our R.V. to Florida. I remember him getting up in the middle of the night and driving, waking up a little bit closer was a good thing.

    1. That's what my parents did to get out of Los Angeles before the morning traffic. They'd start out at 4:00 am. In the beginning there weren't any freeways to get over the mountains to the central valley and my grandparents house. - Margy

  3. RV travelling requires some planning and it sounds you are getting the hang of it. You visit some interesting places, love seeing the blue skies in December.

    1. We had hoped for a few more blue skies and sunshine, but we were happy with the change from our northern climate. - Margy

  4. Shorter days are definitely the way to go. We had only been retired for a couple of years when we started our FullTime adventure ... and we were getting our home ready to sell during that time ... so it took as a little while on the road to realize that we didn’t have to keep to a schedule. So much more enjoyable when you can take time to enjoy the journey! Loving *your* journey ... thanks for sharing it.

  5. It's so nice to see photos of green trees and sun! So many others are getting snow. No snow here, but no green either.

    1. When we left in early November the trees still had some green leaves mixed with fall colours. This week we got home to bare branches. - Margy

  6. 101 is so pretty from Salinas to Los Angeles. That's a pretty scene you caught with that bank of clouds.

  7. Margy - glad you are enjoying yourselves. As I get older, I find it is much harder to sit for long periods!
