Exploring Bellingham: Walking Our Neighbourhood Streets

A showery day walking on Bakerview Road near our condo.
Monday I shared how we are using our condominium's "backyard" to get outdoors and for exercise.

Today I'm expanding our walking distance using neighbourhood sidewalks.

After leaving our condo's path, we walk along the streets of North Bellingham. We have several directions to choose from, north towards Whatcom Community College, east or west along busy Bakerview Road, or through the Bellis Fair shopping center.

Hilly sidewalks around the mall are a good place for heart healthy exercise.

Bellis Fair is a large shopping center with several anchor department stores and an extensive indoor mall  area. The mall is now closed following Governor Inslee's "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" order. The only exceptions are Target which sells food and essentials, and restaurants offering takeout and delivered food.

Bellis Fair's Target store is open for groceries and other needed products.

Heading north we come to Whatcom Community College. I've taken a number of writing and art classes here. We also used to go basketball games when the semi-pro SLAM team played here. Like the mall, the college is closed so the sidewalks are empty for easy distancing.

The entrance to Whatcom Community College.

Each route includes a few hills to give us an extra push. I'm happy to say that my endurance has increased and my heavy breathing has lessened over the last few weeks. It also gives a boost to my mental state.

Cordata Parkway north of Whatcom College is a beautiful place to walk.

And even better, my last visit to the scale didn't include any extra pounds despite staying indoors for the vast majority of the day and eating more, albeit healthy meals.

  1. You are fortunate to have great walking areas, so are we. I'd hate to live in a major city right now. Hubby is using weights, we are walking and we have our treadmill as backup. I really need to do more though. Maybe a treadmill night tonight

    1. Bellingham is pretty large, but it is spread out and we are on the newer north side with more open space still available. - Margy

  2. I've been walking around the outside of the house and spending more time in the garden. Inside I am trying to set up an exercise regime that includes stretches and balance, but haven't quite got that sorted yet. All our restaurants and take-aways are closed and not able to do deliveries either - a lot of folk are having to learn how to cook, which is not a bad thing!

    1. I wish we had more outside space of our own, but quiet streets are a second best thing. Our restaurants are closed but can still provide take-aways and deliveries if they want to. - Margy

    1. I haven't heard that term since I was a kid. We lived in a neighbourhood that had a large parkway in the middle of the road with grass, trees and decorative plants. Each home owner was responsible for cutting the grass and tending the plants in front of their home. - Margy

  4. Glad you have been able to get out and walk. New restrictions were placed on us yesterday here in Mississippi. No going anywhere except for groceries, carry-out food, and medical reasons. I feel very blessed to live in a rural area with our own woods to walk in.
Be careful, stay safe, and have a good weekend!

    1. The little bit of "woods" we have out back only have the very short trail behind our condo. To get enough exercise we usually head towards the closed mall where hardly anyone else goes. - Margy

  5. Walking truly is the best exercise. I love your pointy conifers. We don't have anything like those particular kinds of trees where I live in upstate New York. Thank you for taking us along on your walk. It's been over 30 years since I was last in Washington State. Maybe when all this is over....

    1. We moved north to BC in 2005 after we retired and moved my mother to Bellingham to be closer to us. Now we have her condo as a part-time home in the States. - Margy

  6. Great waking places - Don works just past the Community College now - though he is on furlough for who knows how long. If you walk out behind the tennis courts (or is it the basketball courts?) around 4 p.m. you might see vast numbers of crows - we drove up there about two months ago and saw at least 200 of them - they were everywhere - and quite entertaining. Enjoy your walks and stay well.

    1. We usually head towards the mall, it's so easy to do. Next time we walk north we'll watch for the crows. Once in a while they swarm through the trees behind the condo. - Margy

  7. Your "backyard" looks like a great place to walk. I'm doing much the same in my neck of the woods. Stay safe and healthy!

    1. Yes, and they will get stranger before they get better. I follow my hometown on Facebook and it appears lots of people are getting a bit crazy and not treating each other well. - Margy

  9. Margy - we are blessed to have a treadmill. Given our snowy weather, we purchased it originally to be able to run in the winter. It has been a real blessing now too. Of course, cleaning the house takes a fair amount of energy. We have also been doing yoga - new for me, and I am enjoying it more than I thought I would. Happy Easter to you!

    1. I purchased some stretch bands to use here in the condo. Afraid any equipment would be too noisy for the people downstairs. - Margy
