Exploring Bellingham: Euclid Park

Euclid Park near Lake Whatcom in Bellingham.
Like people around the world, Wayne and I are social distancing.  Rather than cross the Canadian border to return to Powell River, we decided to remain at our Bellingham, Washington, part-time home.  We don't have COVID-19 symptoms, so we can still go out using precautions.

Life has changed a lot. I order groceries and supplies online from Fred Meyer and pick them up in the parking lot already bagged. We stay away from crowds, but do go out once a day for a drive, to walk in our neighbourhood, or visit an uncrowded park.

There are many parks scattered throughout Bellingham and in surrounding Whatcom County. We are taking this opportunity to explore some of them while social distancing from other patrons. Our first outing was to Euclid Park on the shore of Lake Whatcom.

Well maintained and uncrowded trails through a wooded Euclid Park.

We drove there on first day of Spring. It was sunny and warm, perfect to get some much needed fresh air and exercise. Parking is limited in a roadside area on Euclid Avenue north or Lakeway Drive. The trails meandering through the forested park are open daily.

We discovered a beautiful beach on Lake Whatcom at the end of a trail.

The first trail to the left takes you to a pocket beach on Lake Whatcom. A few handmade log benches let you enjoy the view and the crystal clear water. I imagine during summer months this is usually a popular swimming hole for locals. Hopefully this summer it will be again.

Signs of spring are so important right now for our well-being.

It was uplifting to see signs of spring along the trail. I highly recommending getting out in nature right now. Our minds and bodies need the soothing respite it offers.  What have you been doing to help yourself and others at this difficult time? - Margy

  1. It' s so nice to get out in the nature. Spring is a nice time to see everything coming to life. I try to go for a walk each day to get out in the fresh air .
The world is at a standstill. Let's hope this is all over soon and we can get on with our lives.

    1. Walking some of the same streets around our condo we can see the gradual progression of new leaves sprouting and growing. In a way it's a good thing to slow down. - Margy

  2. What better places to social distance than the beautiful outdoors.

Since you and Wayne are Canadian residents, I guess they'd still let you in? I understand they've closed the borders to non-Canadians.

    1. Canada would let us in, even if we were symptomatic and send us to a care facility. Even without you have to go into a 14-day isolation to be safe. - Margy

  3. Nature is healing for the mind and body. Even taking a drive in the car to look at the sky or trees makes me feel uplifted.

  4. Hello Margy! Thank you so much for sharing these beautiful photos of nature in WA. I really hope you guys are safe out there. It's starting to get crazy here in the Philippines but slowly, people are starting to learn the importance of staying at home in this lockdown. Sending you warmth and greetings!

  6. Lovely shots! I guess my next grocery trip will be a parking lot pickup. I hope by then things will be back in stock. We have enough for a week but I prefer fresh.

    1. We had to wait three days to arrange for our grocery pickup. Stayed up until midnight last night to get a reserved spot three days from now. It's still better than braving the stores in person. - Margy

  7. ...my wife and I also have no symptoms, but aren't leaving the house. Our children are keeping us stocked up and make front porch deliveries. Stay well.

    1. You are lucky to have great children to help you out. Not long ago it would have been much harder for the two of us without anyone to help. Many stores here do pickup or delivery so we don't have to get close to lots of people, and the parks here in the Pacific Northwest aren't usually crowded this time of year. - Margy

  8. Getting out in the fresh air in not so crowded places is really the ticket right now. Hopefully, spring will bring healthier outcomes.

    1. I sure hope so. It is disconcerting to see all of the spring breakers on southern beaches so close together though. - Margy

  10. Margy - I am getting outside for a walk every day. On Saturday, hubby and I went for a drive and a 12-mile hike. Glorious. For a few hours we could pretend nothing has changed. We are also trying to limit our consumption of the news to once per day - any more and it is simply overwhelming. Also reaching out to friends via text - that form of contact is better than none! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday, and stay well!

  13. We are still hiking too and the trails are not busy at all. I wonder why more people aren't getting out in nature now! It's so nice and refreshing. We saw lots of wildflowers yesterday and some sweet birds....and only 2 other people! Take care and thanks for sharing your part of the country and the beauty it holds!

  16. Thanks for sharing your hike, Margy. I enjoyed it. It's been raining off and on this month. Fortunately for us we can walk out the back door and get enough exercise criss-crossing the backyard several times. I can also pull weeds when I think about it. :-) Take care.

    1. That's one down side to staying in the condo. We do have a trail around the back next to a nice little creek, but it's a shared space even though only a few dog walkers use it on a regular basis. - Margy
