Snowbird RV Adventure Part 2: Picacho Peak to Pima County Fairgrounds RV Park

Part 2: Days 20 - 21

My favourite weather app is The Weather Network.
February 21: As a teacher, I believed in learning by doing. I continue the practice in my retired life. Throughout this adventure Wayne and I have been sharing tips we've learned along the way. Today we're applying three of them.

#3 - Pick travel days during good weather whenever possible.
#5 - When you are looking for a place to stay consider fairgrounds.
#11 - If weather changes, don't be afraid to ask for an extension.

We knew a storm was coming and checked the weather. Rain would hold off, but strong winds were starting. I called about an extension at Picacho. There was a possibility if we changed sites. I called a future destination to see if we could add days. In the end, we decided to proceed cautiously to the Pima County Fairgrounds RV Park south of Tucson, an hour away.

Site #115 at Pima County Fairgrounds. We are in the "grassy" section.

Pima Fairgrounds is first come-first serve, but with 362 sites there's always room except during the fair or big RV rallies. We called ahead and knew neither of those conditions applied.

Since the park isn't at capacity we have extra space around us.

The sites are spread out around the fairgrounds. All have full hookups for $30 a night, less with a Good Sam discount. It's a good location when Snowbirds are filling up local campgrounds and commercial parks. And there are often events for added entertainment. This weekend there's a horse show, races at the speedway next door and an RV show. And the bar and grill is open, a bonus for us.

A pub style restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner when there are events.

Trip Mileage Log
Leg - 60 miles
Total - 595 miles

La Mesa RV has dealers in CA, AZ, NM and FL.
February 22: We stayed here last year in the motorhome we rented from El Monte RV. We made the Pima Fairgrounds a destination so we could attend the La Mesa RV Show. To our surprise, there was one going on this weekend. After our rental experience and attending RV shows, purchased our Sunseeker 2250 last April.

RV models are grouped by type for easier viewing.
Even though we aren't in the market for a new RV, it's still fun to look at what's currently on the market. We were both happy that we came to the conclusion that our model is still the best one for us.

If you are planning on getting into the RV lifestyle, we recommend renting first and attending several RV shows to make sure it's something you really want to do. -- Wayne and Margy

    1. I can't wrap my head around self-driving cars going to some of the places we visit. But I have seen them on the road in Arizona. - Margy

  3. The adventure continues! We’ve stayed at more than a few Fairgrounds ...but not that one. Cool that they have a Cafe on site.

    1. We love to eat out when we can, and without a towed vehicle we are limited to places in walking distance or using an Uber. - Margy
